The design for a new family home in the countryside near the town of Chino in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Bounded by woodland, the house sits on the glacial foothills of a mountain range popular for winter sports. We were approached by the family to create a home that reflected the qualities of our UK work, but in the context of this rural Japanese landscape.
The design creates a home and work environment for this creative couple set within a sustainable garden developed using permaculture principles. From a distance the house reads as a village settlement with spaces amalgamated to form internal environments and courtyard settings. The home uses materials from the region, being clad in larch shingles and sitting on a lime and stone plinth. The interior creates shared and private vaulted spaces for both parents and child, designed for life long use and adaptability.
